Set in a leafy suburban setting, this verdant family home project brings into use a space that was previously a clay pit, and later garages. Boundaried on all sides by existing residential development, the design could not be taller than the lowest part of the garden wall ‒ hence the single-storey height. The root balls of existing mature trees, which spread into the site from the surrounding gardens, also had to be protected. This established not only the buildable and non-buildable areas, but also a varying sectional topography across the site.

Landscaping is integral to the concept, and although completed last year, the project has only recently been photographed and published, in order to allow the planting to become established. The gardens themselves are wild, dense, and named like rooms: an orchard, a kitchen garden, a flower garden, and the glazed winter garden.
