The Gilbert & George Centre

The Gilbert & George Centre

Westgreen are delighted to reveal our latest arts project. Located just off Brick Lane in Spitalfields, The Gilbert & George Centre involves the conversion of a 19th century former brewery into a new non-profit public gallery and foundation for contemporary art.

The 602m2 scheme comprises three separate exhibition areas with caretaker accommodation. The historic brewery building dates back to c1830 and is set in a secluded and leafy courtyard. Within the perimeter of this complex site, and with no fewer than 37 party wall agreements in place, Westgreen undertook the hollowing out of a basement level while propping up the existing building fabric above. The roof of a further structure from the 1970s was also removed. The scheme ultimately consists of three separate exhibition areas with caretaker accommodation, with wheelchair access to all public areas.

…there’s an unexpectedly warm, even snug quality to the centre, with its courtyard like a village square.
— Jonathan Jones, The Guardian

The project was completed in early 2023 and in a spirit of philanthropy, is entirely funded by Gilbert & George, with access free to all.
